House on the Hill by Kidosaki Architects Studio
Kidosaki Architects Studio have used traditional Japanese architecture in a modern and poetic way.

House on the hill has one simple concept; to unite a residence with an art gallery. The gallery holds the client’s art collection from Japan, China and Korea.

Kidosaki Studio describes the space
“¬†We attempted to create a space where we can feel different types of passage of time, such as distant view of a down town that looks always different, garden‚Äôs seasonal view and never-changing art works. A fa√ßade facing to a garden represents Japanese traditional architecture style due to multiple layers of deep eaves that is designed to express horizontality and openness. The back of eaves is finished with American cedar to harmonize garden‚Äôs natural landscape through sunlight reflected by white sand. Whereas the eaves are brimmed with 36 mm wide phosphate-finished steel plates to so that it can give sharp lines to emphasize a sense of order.”

The interior space consists of an underground and ground level gallery, with the residence on the second floor.

The main exhibition area has a deep green floor made out of a limestone which includes fragments of fossils called Juragreen. The walls are clad in copper plates which are stained with an ancient technique that is used for Buddhist alter fittings. These material qualities help to achieve an atmosphere of antiquity. Kidosaki Studio intended to generate a place where the residents sense eternity and an accumulation of condensed time.

In this project Kidosaki Architects Studio have applied traditional Japanese craft skills back into architecture. By doing so, a space can give out its beauty continuously. The Studio feel that it would be great if they can contribute to succession and development of  the Japanese craftsmanship.
